Out in Film: Del Shores & Jason Dottley

Idol worship: Del Shores, writer/director/producer and Jason Dottley, actor/producer.

- Shores is the award-winning playwright behind the cult stage hits The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife, Daddy's Dyin' (Who's Got the Will?), Sordid Lives and Southern Baptist Sissies. In addition to some of these plays, Dottley starred in an acclaimed production of Terrance McNally's The Lisbon Traviata.

- Shores also directed the film version of Sordid Lives, now a LOGO TV series co-starring Dottley as the sexually ambiguous Ty.

- On television, Shores wrote for and produced such series as Ned and Stacey, Dharma & Greg and Queer as Folk.

- After Sordid Lives: The Series, the duo are working on a film adaptation of Southern Baptist Sissies, set to star Delta Burke and Leslie Jordan.

- In the meantime, the married couple are starring in their own Sordid Lives vlog on LOGOOnline.com.

Out in Film: Phyllida Lloyd

Idol worship: Phyllida Lloyd, director.

- This week she makes her feature film debut with Mamma Mia!, the ABBA musical she steered to success in London, New York and worldwide.

- She is primarily known for her theatrical works in her native England, including a stint at the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company; in 2006, the Independent named her among the 100 most influential gay and lesbian people in Britain.

- Her first commercial success was the West End hit Six Degrees of Separation, followed by acclaimed productions of The Threepenny Opera, What the Butler Saw, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and many others.

- In addition to her theatrical works, she has also directed several operas, including award winning stagings of La Boheme, Medea and the world premiere of The Handmaid's Tale (based on the novel by Margaret Atwood).

- Her only previous film experience was a television version of the opera Gloriana, which won an International Emmy Award.

Out in Film: Alec Mapa

Idol worship: Alec Mapa, actor/comedian.

- As "America's Gaysian Sweetheart" (self-proclaimed), he is a multi-talented actor of stage and screen and a very very funny comedian, who is also an advocate for several GLBT and Asian American causes.

- Remember R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" video? He was the boy tied to a tree with an arrow piercing his heart. Talk about your show biz debut!

- In addition to his own stand-up specials, he co-starred in the short-lived, based-on-Kiss Me, Guido sitcom Some of My Best Friends Are. Other television appearances include recurring roles on Desperate Housewives (as Vern, Gabrielle's gay pal) and Ugly Betty (as fabulous fashionista Suzuki St. Pierre); he also recently hosted LOGO's reality/dating show Transamerican Love Story.

- At the movies, he has had small but memorable roles in Bright Lights, Big City; Connie and Carla; Dirty Laundry; You Don't Mess with the Zohan and current festival fave Tru Loved.

- It has been an eventful week for him: not only did he just celebrate a birthday, he is being honored by the Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival tonight as their "2008 Entertainer of the Year". Get her.

Out in Film: Jaye Davidson

Idol worship: Jaye Davidson, actor.

- Bursting onto the world stage as Dil, the gender-bending hairdresser that was at the center of The Crying Game's biggest secret, his (in)famous full frontal scene is likely the most notorious in film history.

- He was discovered at the wrap party for Derek Jarman's Edward II; supposedly, he was unaware that he would have to appear nude onscreen until the day of filming the "big reveal".

- His Crying Game performance, which was not only his first on film but his first acting job ever, netted him Oscar and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actor and the National Board of Review's prize for "Most Auspicious Debut".

- All the attention from The Crying Game unnerved him so that when the producers of Stargate offered him the role of the godlike Ra, he said that he would only do it for $1 million. They agreed, although they had to alter his costume to hide his freshly pierced nipples.

- Stargate was his last film performance; afterwards, he returned to the career he had prior to all the Crying Game fame, in the British fashion industry. To date, he has expressed no desire to return to acting.

Out in Film: Jane Lynch

Idol worship: Jane Lynch, actress.

- She began her career onstage, touring with the famed Second City comedy troupe and playing Carol Brady in The Real Live Brady Bunch.

- Her breakthrough role was in the Christopher Guest mockumentary Best in Show. She has since co-starred in Guest's A Mighty Wind (wherein she did all her own singing and guitar playing) and For Your Consideration.

- Other films include The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Bam Bam and Celeste, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

- She has made many many television appearances, everything from Judging Amy and 7th Heaven to Felicity and The L Word.

- Upcoming movies include the gay-themed Tru Loved, the animated comedy Space Chimps and Julie & Julia, in which she'll play the sister of Meryl Streep's Julia Child.

Out in Film: Jerry Mitchell

Idol worship: Jerry Mitchell, actor/dancer/ director/choreographer.

- He began his career as a dancer in such Broadway productions as Brigadoon, On Your Toes and The Will Rogers Follies.

- After assisting dance legend Jerome Robbins, he became a choreographer in his own right with You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. He received Tony and/or Drama Desk nominations for The Full Monty, The Rocky Horror Show, Hairspray, Never Gonna Dance and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, finally winning both prizes for the 2004 revival of La Cage aux Folles.

- Directing was next on his agenda, and he got his chance with the hit Legally Blonde - The Musical. In connection with that show, he can currently be seen on the MTV reality series that is conducting The Search for Elle Woods, and was recently part of another TV talent show, Step It Up and Dance.

- Film work as a choreographer has included the classic tango scene from Scent of a Woman, as well as such other movies as In & Out, The Object of My Affection, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Camp (yes, it's "Turkey Lurkey Time").

- During his chorus boy days, he created the now legendary Broadway Bares annual burlesque shows to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Now celebrating its 18th year, this year's edition, titled Wonderland, will be presented this Sunday. Also new: his book, Backstage Pass: Broadway Bares,all about the show's creation and evolution over the years.

Out in Film: Tommy Tune

Idol worship: Tommy Tune, actor/singer/dancer/ director/choreographer.

- He is the recipient of nine Tony Awards, and was the first person to win in four different categories; he has won for performing (featured actor for Seesaw, lead actor for My One and Only), directing (Nine, Grand Hotel, The Will Rogers Follies) and choreographing (A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, My One and Only, Grand Hotel, The Will Rogers Follies).

- Among his many other stage credits: Irma La Douce, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Grease, Bye Bye Birdie, Dr. Dolittle and the Las Vegas spectacular EFX.

- He has also won such prestigious awards as the Drama Desk Award (eight times), the Obie Award (twice), the National Medal of Arts, the Fred & Adele Astaire Lifetime Achievement Award and, on June 15, the Julie Harris Lifetime Achievement Award.

- Mostly stage bound throughout his career, he did co-star in the movie versions of Hello, Dolly! and The Boy Friend; his television appearances include several Tony Award telecasts (naturally), dance specials and Broadway documentaries.

- He has published his memoirs, titled Footnotes,and released a solo album, titled Slow Dancing.And if that weren't enough, he is also an artist, with his own gallery in Tribeca.

Out in Film: Scott Thompson

Idol worship: Scott Thompson, actor/comedian/writer.

- He is best known for his many comedic creations on the cult TV hit The Kids in the Hall, including the fabulously fey Buddy Cole and the Queen of England. The Kids also starred in their own movie, Brain Candy.

- He played Brian, Hank's gay assistant on The Larry Sanders Show; he also appeared in such other television programs as Star Trek: Voyager, Providence and Carpoolers.

- Also on TV, he has co-starred in two Tales of the City mini-series and the TV movie Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story, plus voiced characters on The Simpsons, Lilo & Stitch and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and hosted the Canadian reality show My Fabulous Gay Wedding.

- His Buddy Cole has also appeared in movies (Bruce La Bruce's Super 8½), television (Dinner and a Movie), books (Buddy Babylon,his autobiography) and the internet (his very own blog, titled Ewe).

- He recently completed a Kids in the Hall national tour and will next be seen in Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild (reprising his role as closeted dad Mr. Wilson from Another Gay Movie) and the New York-set drama Shifting the Canvas.

Out in Film: Cynthia Nixon

Today concludes our four part salute to the stars of Sex and the City as they are about to make the leap to the silver screen with their new movie, in theaters today.

Idol worship: Cynthia Nixon, actress.

- As the no-nonsense career gal Miranda Hobbs, she finally won a deserved Emmy Award (on her third try) in the show's final season. She was also nominated five times for the Golden Globe.

- Also on television, she co-starred in Robert Altman's Tanner '88 and guest-starred on everything from Law & Order and House to Murder She Wrote and Touched by an Angel. In 2005, she was nominated for an Emmy and a Globe for her performance as Eleanor Roosevelt in the TV movie Warm Springs.

- She made her film debut in Little Darlings, a.k.a. Sex and the City: The Training Bra Years. Other notable early film work includes The Prince of the City, I Am the Cheese, Amadeus, The Manhattan Project and Addams Family Values. Post-Sex, she has co-starred in Advice from a Caterpillar, The Out-of-Towners and Igby Goes Down.

- Her Broadway debut came with a revival of The Philadelphia Story; in 1984, she simultaneously appeared in two hit Broadway plays directed by Mike Nichols: The Real Thing and Hurlyburly. Subsequent stage work includes The Heidi Chronicles, Angels in America and Indiscretions, which earned her a Tony nomination as Best Featured Actress in a Play.

- She starred as "Mrs. Stephen Haines" in the 2001 revival of The Women, which later aired on PBS, and won the Tony Award as Best Actress for the drama Rabbit Hole in 2006.

Out in Film: Darren Star

Idol worship: Darren Star, writer/director/producer.

- He is the creator of three of our favorite TV obsessions: Beverly Hills, 90210; Melrose Place and Sex and the City.

- An Emmy winning producer for the latter, as well as the upcoming movie version (in theaters May 30).

- He has also given us such series as Central Park West, Grosse Point, Miss Match, Kitchen Confidential and the recent (and recently cancelled) Cashmere Mafia.

- In addition to writing and producing his series', he has also directed several episodes.

- Next up: the much-talked about 90210 update.

Out in Film: Mario Cantone

Idol worship: Mario Cantone, actor/writer/comedian.

- Is best known as the flaky, materialistic professional stylist Anthony Marentino on Sex and the City, a role he'll reprise in the upcoming movie, in theaters May 30.

- The fast-paced, manic comedian got his start hosting the New Jersey-based TV kid's show Steampipe Alley; numerous Comedy Central appearances followed, including Chappelle's Show and his own stand-up special.

- He made his Broadway debut in Terrence McNally's Love! Valour! Compassion!, and has also starred in The Tempest, The Violet Hour and Assassins, as well as has own one-man shows, An Evening with Mario Cantone and the Tony Award nominated Laugh Whore, which was filmed for Showtime.

- Film roles include voice over work for Farce of the Penguins and Surf's Up and an appearence in the notorious The Aristocrats, wherein he memorably told the infamous joke as Liza Minelli (see the clip here - NSFW).

- He has made numerous guest appearances on daytime's The View (and was even rumored to join the female-centric talk show as a co-host for a while) and most recently had a recurring role on the now cancelled primetime dramedy Men in Trees.

Out in Film: Perry Moore

Idol worship: Perry Moore, director/writer/producer.

- He started his show biz career on the original production team of The Rosie O'Donnell Show.

- As part of Walden Media, he brought C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia series to Disney. The first film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, was a huge hit; its sequel, Prince Caspian, opens next week.

- His first film as a writer/director (with his partner Hunter Hill), Lake City (a family drama starring Sissy Spacek, Troy Garity, Rebecca Romijn and Keith Carradine), is due later this year.

- Also in the works is a documentary about famed children's book author Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) with director Spike Jonze.

- In addition to his work in film, he is also a best-selling author; his first novel, Hero(about a gay superhero) is currently in development for the silver screen.

Out in Film: Todd Haynes

Idol worship: Todd Haynes, writer/director/producer.

- His infamous short film, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (which told the story of the late anorexic singer's life using Barbie dolls), prompted a copyright infringement lawsuit by Richard Carpenter due to the unlicensed use of the recording duo's music. It was pulled from distribution, but you can see it here in full (don't you just love these unlawful internets).

- More controversy came with his feature film debut, Poison; the film earned him the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the title of one of the vanguard of the "new queer cinema", but due to its partial funding by the National Endowment of the Arts, it was targeted by the religious right, who labeled the experimental work "filth".

- Venturing into "safer" territory (for him at least), he has brought us the AIDS parable Safe, the glam rock musical Velvet Goldmine and the Douglas Sirk-inspired Far from Heaven, for which he received an Oscar nomination for its Original Screenplay.

- In addition to writing and directing his own work, he produced Quinceañera, has appeared in several documentaries about independent and queer film, and directed a music video for Sonic Youth.

- His most recent work, the unconventional Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, will be released on DVDthis Tuesday.

Out in Film: Neil Patrick Harris

Idol worship: Neil Patrick Harris, actor.

- He first gained fame as the prepubescent prodigy Doogie Howser, M.D., a role that won him three Young Artist Awards and a Golden Globe nomination.

- Guest spots on Blossom; Roseanne; Quantum Leap; Murder, She Wrote and Will and Grace followed. He has also lent his voice to several animated series, voicing such famous superhero characters as Spider-Man and The Flash.

- For his feature film debut in Clara's Heart, he received his second Golden Globe nod. He has also appeared in Starship Troopers and The Next Best Thing.

- His first stage role was in a school production of The Wizard of Oz ... as Toto. On Broadway, he has starred in the musicals Rent, Cabaret and Assassins and played Toby in a televised concert version of Sweeney Todd.

- He currently co-stars on How I Met Your Mother, in his Emmy nominated role as the womanizing Barney Stinson, and can be seen on the big screen this weekend in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, reprising the heterosexualized alternate universe version of himself that he first played in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.

Out in Film: Wilson Cruz

Idol worship: Wilson Cruz, actor.

- As Rickie Vasquez on the cult TV classic My So-Called Life, he was one of the first openly gay actors to play an openly gay character on network television. After Life ended, he guest starred on Ally McBeal, ER, The West Wing and had recurring roles on Party of Five and Noah's Arc.

- On film, he has appeared in Nixon, Johns, Party Monster, Bam Bam and Celeste and the popular gay rom com Coffee Date.

- He made his Broadway debut playing the cross-dressing performance artist Angel in Rent.

- He currently voices Evan on the LOGO comedy series Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World and will return to Noah's Arc for the upcoming movie version.

- At the recent GLAAD Media Awards, he was the recipient of their Visibilidad Award, honoring "openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for our community".

Out in Film: Calpernia Addams

Idol worship: Calpernia Addams, actress/singer/ producer.

- The tragic story of her relationship with Army Private Barry Winchell was told in the award-winning TV movie Soldier's Girl, starring Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies) in a Golden Globe nominated performance as Calpernia.

- Meeting Jane Fonda during the filming of that movie (Fonda's son, Troy Garity, played Winchell) led to her starring in the first all-transgender performance of the acclaimed play The Vagina Monologues, which was also the subject of the documentary Beautiful Daughters.

- She and her producing partner, Andrea James, run Deep Stealth Productions; their current projects include the short film Casting Pearls and a pilot for a proposed television series, starring Callie; they also served as consultants on the landmark film Transamerica, both appearing in cameos in it as well.

- Which guy will Callie choose? The answer will be revealed this Monday with the final episode of Transamerican Love Story, the groundbreaking transgender dating show on LOGO.
