Awards Watch: Emmy Nominations 2008

The 2008 Emmy Award nominations were announced today, which means: time to start complaining. Seriously, Two and a Half Men, one of the least original "comedies" on TV today, instead of the brilliantly creative Pushing Daisies, the revitalized Desperate Housewives and the one and only Ugly Betty? Boston Legal, again? At least Lost returned to the Best Drama line-up.

Nevertheless, some of our favorites did make the cut, including Daisies' Lee Pace and Kristin Chenoweth, Betty's America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams, Housewives' Polly Bergen and Kathryn Joosten, Brothers & Sisters' Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths, Lost's Michael Emerson and Grey's Anatomy's Diahann Carroll, Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson.

Also among the nominees include out actors Neil Patrick Harris and Cynthia Nixon, plus the TV movies Bernard and Doris (along with stars Ralph Fiennes and Susan Sarandon), A Raisin in the Sun (and its stars Phylicia Rashad and Audra McDonald, who both won Tonys for the Broadway production) and High School Musical 2 and the specials Movies Rock, Company, AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Movies - 10th Anniversary Edition and the 80th Annual Academy Awards.

The Emmys will be presented live on ABC on Sunday September 21.

Cinematic Crush: Jason Lewis

Crush object: Jason Lewis, actor/model.

- He is best known as the object of Samantha Jones' affection/lust, Absolut Hunk model Smith Jerrod on Sex and the City; he returns to the role this week when the Sex movie hits the big screen Friday.

- Soon after graduating college, his modeling career started in Paris and Milan for some of the biggest names in fashion, including Guess?, Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss.

- A guest shot on Beverly Hills, 90210 led to his Sex stint, which was followed by recurring roles on Charmed and Brothers and Sisters, wherein he played Kevin's closeted soap star boyfriend Chad Barry.

- Other film roles include Next Stop Wonderland, The Jacket, My Bollywood Bride and Mr. Brooks.

- Fans are rallying around him to play superhero Captain America in the upcoming movie adaptation of the long-running comic book.

I Now Pronounce You Kevin and Scotty

Television history will be made tomorrow night on ABC's Brothers and Sisters: for the first time, two regular gay characters on American primetime network TV will get hitched (or as much as they can in California, where the series is set).

In last week's penultimate episode, Kevin Walker (played by Matthew Rhys) proposed to his boyfriend Scotty Wandell (Luke MacFarlane), and their wedding ceremony will serve as the crux of the second season finale. Also, another gay-themed storyline, involving the closeted uncle Saul (Ron Rifkin), will be just one of the many other family secrets touched on, so be sure to have the tissues handy.

In recognition of the landmark occasion, GLAAD has compiled a comprehensive media resource on "marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships for gay couples".

Television favorites Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty and Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List were honored "for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community" at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles last night. It is the second year in a row that Brothers and Betty won in their respective categories.

Also recognized for their contributions to visibility and equality were Janet Jackson, Rufus Wainwright and the late Herb Ritts.

Brothers & Sisters' Luke Macfarlane Comes Out

Luke Macfarlane, who plays Kevin Walker's boyfriend Scotty on Brothers and Sisters, publically came out today in an interview with the Toronto Globe and Mail. He states, "I don't know what will happen professionally ... that is the fear, but I guess I can't really be concerned about what will happen, because it's my truth."

SPOILER ALERT: He also reveals that Scotty and Kevin (played by Matthew Rhys) will get hitched in the season finale of the Emmy Award winning drama. Brothers and Sisters returns this Sunday on ABC with the first of the final four episodes of the season.
